Environment Awareness

Conducted at a very basic level, these programs include dealing with the people and introducing them to concepts and creative activities of environmental awareness and personal hygiene. Environmental awareness and sustainable development has been a big issue in Nepalese as the country develops. The government is not able to manage the wastage properly due to lack of awareness and education among population. Volunteers should expect to involve themselves in educational activities which will highlight the advantages of sanitation, waste management (methods of disposal, minimizing waste & recycling), and teaching them some basic techniques to develop sustainable lives. Related activities also include planting trees, recycling programs, making of smoke free stoves, using alternate sources of energy such as biogas and community clean-ups. Although an immense challenge, such programs will undoubtedly benefit the local population and provide the much needed stability in the long-term; a foresight greatly lacking in the local government.

Home Stay & Cultural Exchange

Home stays and cultural exchange programs are a fantastic way to get more out of your trip to Nepal and can be arranged in most areas of Nepal with our 30 Host families. Participants will be placed with a Nepali family in various locations across Nepal for the duration of their stay. This provides the volunteers with an excellent opportunity to immerse themselves completely with Nepalese culture, lifestyle, language, food and traditions. Volunteers should remember that this is a cultural exchange and that an effort to offer some knowledge of their own home culture and customs to the family with whom they stay with is very much appreciated.

During their stay, volunteers will attend daily language lessons in the morning and afternoon. They will also have the opportunity to visit and help out at the local school if they wish. Home stay programs are best organized from August to December which is the time when most large local festivals take place. Thereupon, volunteers can be submerged into the countless festivities of Nepal, accompanied by their host family. This makes for an overall more exciting experience for volunteers as they will gain a unique local insight into Nepalese life; something normally missed in most international tour packages. Nepali culture is also distinctively friendly and open, participants will be made to feel as though they are part of their host families. VEX Nepal local co-ordinators will be on hand to assist the volunteers every step of their way.

Monastery Experience

Volunteers of VEX Nepal will be primarily working at the monasteries as English instructors, helping to develop a strong foundation for the monks in hopes of creating a sustainable educational system from which the future generations can benefit from. Outside of the classroom, volunteers can also organize extra-curricular activities in the monastery such as sports, drawing and singing competitions along with other creative or interactive activities etc. Finally, monks on pilgrimages are finding it increasingly tough to adapt to the outside world due to the stark contrast to their accustomed lives. We would like our volunteers to provide invaluable insights into the world outside of the monastery and teach them how to deal with this entirely new culture as well. Nevertheless, no experience is one-sided and volunteers should prepare themselves to discover an alternate lifestyle after which they will undoubtedly feel mentally, physically and emotionally refreshed. Embark on this adventure and uncover the simplest yet most fulfilling joys in life.

Orphanage Support

For most of us, growing up with the support and security of at least one parent is something that is taken for granted. Unfortunately, for orphaned children this is a privilege few ever come to enjoy. As a volunteer at an orphanage, you will be able to provide the imperative keystones for the healthy development of each child. Primarily, you will be the academic cornerstone to the children, helping to develop a sturdy academic foundation upon which they can access countless opportunities later in their lives and thus succeed to flourish in the outside world. Resources are often scarce, so by providing guidance for their homework and on any other subject that their curiosity demands, you will be providing a huge plus to their lives. Depending upon your own expertise and interests you can also teach drawing, music, dance, cooking, or any number of activities, and generally just spend quality time with the children. However, your influence will inevitably extend far beyond these academic parameters. Children naturally search for role-models in their lives upon which they will shape their perspective on what a 'model citizen' is. During your stay, you will be a direct influence on the moulding of each child's concept of social responsibility, self-respect and self-confidence; traits typically neglected for children in their situation.

Some orphanages can provide accommodation for volunteers; alternatively you can stay with a local host family and work at the orphanage during the day/evening. Your duties will include: taking care of the needs of the children, teaching them, helping with cooking, getting them ready for school and accompanying them on weekend trips. Most orphanages also welcome assistance from volunteers for the organizations themselves. This involves working with staff to develop marketing, fundraising, and long-term strategies for the orphanage. Consequently, this can be a very challenging journey but this only makes it one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. After all, you are doing nothing short of shaping and improving the lives of our future generation!

Primary Health Care Support

VEX Nepal is seeking personnel who are interested in being at the forefront of medical accessibility in Nepal. Preferably, volunteers should have experience in the healthcare field i.e. doctors, nurses, medical and nursing students with clinical experience but this is not mandatory as there are many jobs to be filled at most medical stations in the impoverished areas of Nepal. Medically trained volunteers will be able to provide medical expertise and help to introduce basic healthcare to impoverished rural populations, the elderly and orphan children in Nepal. Those without any specific medical training can still be utilized in the logistical side of these medical stations, helping to organize patients, assist the doctor with basic procedures and raise awareness in the area. We advise you to make a group of 5-10 participants and if possible to bring materials, such as first aid kits, medical books, instruments, etc. to help these projects. In addition, volunteers will be teaching the people basic procedures in coping with diseases such as the proper way to use oral dehydration solutions, precautions to be taken during a disease phase, proper use of medication, symptoms of common sicknesses etc. Healthcare is imperative for any development of a community, without such basic facilities we cannot hope to alleviate the struggles of such populations such as the mere security of surviving the common flu or fever.

Sustainable & Ecological Farming

Development of a country is almost hazardous in a country if it is not sustainable. As a volunteer with the Sustainable & Ecological Farming Program, you will gain hands-on experience helping local farmers, students and local communities to cultivate and harvest organic crops. Contribute to a self-sustaining society and equip yourself with far more than farming skills as you undertake the challenges and simple joys that come hand in hand with such a life. If you are new to organic and ecological farming fear not, you will be eased into each process by your host family and local farmers. As always, a local co-ordinator from VEX Nepal will be right by your side throughout your placement. We have several vibrant farms where a variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs now thrive within the Kathmandu Valley, Chitwan and Pokhara. Free yourself from the rat race of modern society and discover a refreshingly new spectrum of life.

Teaching English

Nepalese may be the national language of Nepal but nowadays, gloablization has opened bridges linking each and every nation across the globe. As the universal language of our modern society, English is essential for accessing and utilizing the countless opportunities made available to us. Help improve English learning methods and speaking skills of local Nepalese people through various resource centers that are designed to teach basic grammar and vocabulary to children and youths in Nepal. We plan to set up resource centers in the smaller communities of the rural areas as well to benefit the part of the population typically overlooked by the Nepalese government. Volunteers can feel free to teach English through any method that they feel fit, be it with dancing, singing, skits, interactive exercises etc. Besides teaching English, we ensure the volunteers that they will be getting the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and customs of the village communities of Nepal they experience. Most classes begin at 9.30am and end by 3pm/3.30pm thus providing volunteers with ample time to explore their respective areas every day! The fruits of your efforts will not be contained within the four walls of the schools but undoubtedly open numerous doors for the students in their later lives as they look to explore the vast world as you may well have done so in your life.

Women Empowerment

Development in a country cannot be restricted to the numerical statistics of GDP, fertility rate or literacy rates any more. Social equality is key to the growth of any country and one of the most common issues that developing countries face nowadays is gender equality. Unfortunately, this is no different in Nepal as women fight to create equal opportunities that will allow them to become financially independent in their lives. Volunteers will have the opportunity to play a primary role in the early stages of small women-run businesses and organisations while also helping to educate the local female population on family health, women rights, income generation and social independence. You will not only share your ideas for various projects or schemes but also see them grow as you work hand-in-hand with local women groups in hopes of eradicating gender prejudice in our country. Volunteers need not be experienced in similar projects but merely willing to undertake the challenge of applying your personal expertise to completely new challenges. Help us in our small but necessary steps towards a better Nepal.
